The Daily Drip
"Chris, what do you think I should do? Should I get a tenure track position? Should I enroll in a Master's program? Should I drop everything and move to Seattle?"
I was talking with a student recently and he asked for my advice.
Instead of telling him what I thought was good advice, I asked him questions about his lifestyle, where he gets his motivation and when he gets anxiety around taking risk.
By the end of the conversation, I had provided no advice--only questions.
By the end of the conversation, he had a smile on his face with new ideas about how to proceed.
"Advice" is often just another way of saying "Here are the 8 numbers I used to win the lottery."
